Meyer HD-1 Speakers?

I've heard great things about them and that Roger Nichols is using them etc. Has anyone here used them?

They're excellent speakers - pretty much without rival in their size/price class. The closest things I've found to them would be B&W 805s powered by a great amp (a completely different sound, but equal in quality). Other than that, it's tough to say what else may come close. Some of the PMC stuff maybe (again, a totally different sound). As for their 2nd hand costs, I don't know...sorry. They're pricey when they're new.

I had the HD-1's as my prefered choice, be settled with Genelec 1031's only becuase of the fantastic deal I got on the 1031's. The HD-1's are so good and coveted that is fairly rare to find them used and when yo do they seem keep their value pretty well.

While I've used and love the sound of the HD 1's I find the biggest problem with them is that con founded polyfoam/polyurethane whatever, woofer suspension. That stuff rots out in less than 10 years. You're guaranteed an expensive repair when that happens. It will happen. It's not an if. This happen to a friend of mines. Meyer wants in excess of $1500 to repair the two. That in addition to calibrating them to make certain that they meet like new specifications. He elected not to go that route and had a local speaker repair place fix them. But then, you're not assured of like to calibration playback standards. So if you're going to own extremely expensive reference calibration monitors know that the upkeep can be more than you anticipated. Buyer beware. I find that my mixes are just as adequate utilizing my old-fashioned, rock-and-roll standard JBL & KRK monitors that don't have those awful polyurethane suspensions. Unfortunately my JBL 4411' did but my older 4310's from 1968, 4311's from 1978 & the ones from 1988 in addition to the 4312's from 1998 don't have that problem because the woofers don't have those easily rotted woofer suspensions. And when they get holes in them, it doesn't matter if the speaker is still suspended because response suffered greatly.

They are also not brute force monitors & not designed to be played as loudly as the rock-and-roll popular JBL & KRK's are. So it really doesn't matter what Roger Nichols has or likes since those are not his only speakers. None of us possess a single pair.
