Synergy,
I've read your question and seen all the answers given and now I must chime in. Are you going to be mixing the "Sound Design". Where is it ultimetly going to be mixed? The way that I learned was from haning out with some incredibly talented people, saw what they did, asked questions and then applied what I knew to the finished product. Too many people now have a workstation to do their work on , yet don't understand the mixing process. A quick point here or there won't make up for hard work! Go hang out with the people you admire or who you would like to emulate. Observe,question and try!
