All rooms need corner bass trapping, plus absorption at the side-wall and ceiling reflection points. The rear wall behind you is also important to treat, especially if it's closer than about ten feet away. Treating it at ear level is most important, but extending the treatment from floor to ceiling helps further.

I've been looking into this. The paint is slightly shinier than the canvas, so slightly more reflections...
However, if you can find material with large holes in it, then can paint without filling in the holes it should work fine.

Do it even if it makes things sound worse. Good visuals make for a good atmosphere and the atmosphere will flavor any recording way more than acoustics.

Psycho Acoustics.

Like setting levels by looking at meters...

Hearing frequencies and relating them to colours.

People can "tell" all kinds of shit. ;P

What I want to know is, if it isn't such a bad thing, why are so many acoustic panels so drab?

In which case use a slightly lighter weave of cotton, that still has the "breathe through" qualities and use ink, which will dye more than paint will cover. Stick that on basstraps.net.

Many bass traps are the same as panels meant for mid and high frequencies, but thicker. Thick panels absorb mids and highs too, but go lower than thin ones. That is, the thicker the panel, the lower it absorbs to.

As for painting them, if you use water color paints or fabric dye that should not affect absorption much if at all.
