If we apply that to a mix contest, you could categorise it, in varying levels of mixing experience.
Maybe people could choose their own category, but this won't work if everyone wants to win ofc.
Unfortunately I'm naive and personally would rather do it for the learning experience and chance to compare with others.
Perhaps, multiple contests. A mix contest or two, including tracks of all styles - a real musical mashup with distorted guitar, classical instruments etc.
And then also some random draws if people can provide a meaningful answer to a question - even just PMing someone instead of posting publicly. Then all the answers are posted publicly too, and the best are entered to a draw to win something. |

I'm on a photography forum, and there are numerous assignments each month on there. There is no loot to win, but they are quite varied so the don't depend necessarily on where you live, what kind of gear you have, or a bent toward a certain type of photography.
They way they work them is that at the end of the month (or two months, depending), all the submissions are reviewed and the top 6 are posted for voting by the forum members. The winner of the assignment does the top-6 selection for the next month's assignment.
Considering that this is a RECORDING board, I'd think similar challenges could be issued here. Assignments could vary to cover different enviroments and talents. Many of them could have little to nothing to do with music, but could be valid recording challenges.
A few things that come to mind - sound effects, ambient sounds, record your pet, post tracks and ask folks to mix them, post a trashy file and ask folks to clean it up, etc. |

"record your pet,"
"post a trashy file and ask folks to clean it up,"
I can live with that.
Doesn't the latter happen a lot anyway .
Personally I couldn't do ambient sounds, my "converters" don't do low noise. |

If someone cleans up a trashy file, if they made a how to of what they did so people could learn... That would be gold. Then give them a prize. |

Now now, that would encourage spammers.
Just me is bad enough.
Perhaps RO could use a shoutbox? A place to post endless chatter anyway, rather than filling a multitude of threads with bits of conversation. |

Code,
Just be glad we're no over at the Cubase forum. One of the mods is threatening to kick anybody off that hijacks threads.
By "hijacking" he means asking a secondary question.
We wouldn't last 2 mins. over there. |

I say we go gang up on him.
Sure, he wins eventually, but he's going to be bugged after he has to ban 100 accounts.
The guy has clearly not had a proper conversation in about 20 years. The amount of times conversations drift off point going down some totally different and usually interesting or beneficial line, is incredible. |

Indeed. Like I was saying, whatever way is decided to give products away it has to allow the most amount of users an equal opportunity to win.
Wouldn't seem fair to, say, give a hypothetical recording situation and then ask what would it require to tackle it.
But it would be closer to even, closer I say, if that same question were asked and the only way it could be answered would be if the answer was something located from posts or threads found here at RO. |

Says the man who has a home page with the only thing on it is a search bar for RO...
Shenanigans, I'm calling it. |

I like the idea of mixing "Contest" but who will submit the song, recordings etc?
I think we could all learn something listening to each others mixes |

I do a "Polish the Turd" competition in the music tech class I teach. I give the students a finite set of loops that they have to work with that have to be audible in the final project in some way, but then...anything goes. they can add/splic/dice/ remix/ etc...
We could do something similar with live tracks, loops, and ???
Just a thought.

Another contest idea is you could have a "Best reply" to a treads question contest. Maybe nominated by someone else on the board besides the "replier". Then voted on at the end of the contest period. |
