I really, really liked that. It was simple and yet, to me, it captured the mood in a very nice way.

Thanks.

I'll pass the praise to the writer/performers
Any comments on the recording / (lack of) mixing?
Cheers

I still have not had a chance to listen on good quality speakers or even headphones, but I thought I'd chime in. It's an excellent performance and I love the vibe of the recording. I think that a single stereo pair recording for this type of jazz has a great feel. However, I'm guessing that you didn't have a lot of options for the positioning of the instruments because of the size of your practice space - so your stereo image isn't quite as good as the best studio recordings of this type from the 50's. I think I would have tried adding a spot mic on the piano and a pair of overheads (or maybe just one) on the drums, so I could use just a bit of the spot mics to spread the field a little.

Also (and this may be off base because of the crappy speakers I am listening with) the bass seems too heavy in the mix. Could be room resonances, but it might be position or volume (sounds like he is amplified).

My $.02

thanks

the bass and guitar are amplified
the room is about 3 x 5.5 m (10 x 18ft)
the direction of the stereopair is lengthwide
mics in NOS position
in the mix I did panned the stereotrack a little inward because of the amount of out-of-phase stuff, particularly in the low frequencies

bass-heavy : yes, I need to eq this, or maybe some multiband comp and phase correction?

cheers

The only point that stuck out to me was that at times the guitar seemed to have just a tad too much treble. Not sure if it was something that could be controlled though..(rolling back tone on the guitar, cutting back treble on the amp, etc.)

Certainly not a deal breaker by any stretch.

I can see why those mics are so highly recommended now. Great sound for the price!
Thanks for posting, these are now on my short list for new overheads.

Sounds real good. I would even say amazing. I love the throatiness of that sax. You can feel it in your chest.
