I hate to be so lame with such a low post count, but... I have an M-Audio Firewire 410. I also have Vista x64. I know, I know, who wants to use Vista for recording. Well the answer is that I do. I really find it weak that an OS that has been out for so long is not supported. I'm not talking about Vista. They don't even have XP x64 drivers. What gives? Talk about a marketing company that does engineering on the side. They have beta drivers, which I'd gladly use, but you have to join their beta to use them. You have to APPLY for their beta.

I guess this is just a rant.

And a plea for help. Who has the login, pass, and address for the beta site? Feeling generous? PM me.

The obvious response is that it appears that they are working on it for a relatively new OS, and are in Beta-testing to try to work out bugs.

If you decide to try to use a product that wasn't initially designed for an OS, then you should have stuck to the OS it was designed for.

Otherwise, since you decided to go with one that isn't fully recommended yet, you have to suffer the consequences of jumping the gun.

The other obvious question is, why not follow this link, sign up, and see if it works? Like anyone else has to?

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.betaprogram

Not trying to be a butthead, but you can do this yourself. Or, you can keep ranting when a possible solution is right in front of you.

OK...I am being kind of a butthead...but... Rolling Eyes

No, you're right, I should have checked before I installed vista. I just don't like that they aren't doing open beta like they used to. It used to be that you could go get the beta and it would work just fine. They are 1.5 months away from releasing it supposedly. That, to me, says that this thing must be working well enough for an open beta.

The reason I don't want to follow the link and sign up is because I don't want to get back to them on a potentially daily basis like they ask for. I don't have time for that. If I can't agree to it, I'm not going to sign up for it. Also, I don't really have much to offer them as a beta tester.

As for it being a new OS, Vista could maybe be called new (not really though), but they don't even have XP x64 support. Weaksauce!

Again, you're right, I should have checked before I installed Vista. It's no big deal though, I just installed 32 bit last night and got it working on a different computer. It was just a frustrating extra step.

And therein lies the problem. If they have an open Beta, the world and his wife will be posting bugs till kingdom come, which slows the release of the finished article.

And why would that be bad? That would mean that they could prioritize and fix the worst bugs, keep updating the beta, and arrive at a better finished product.

Plenty of companies have never wanted to support Windows XP Media Center Edition & haven't. Vista is just a variation of that dissonant theme, that they don't want to support, that, won't work properly with, if ever?

Just because you think 64 is better than 32 you've gotten stung. You bought into the numbers game that doesn't mean anything until everybody else agrees to follow the same recipes. Obviously, your not working any faster than 32-bit. Maybe even slower? It makes sense, you know. It takes twice as long to count to 64 than it does to 32. I mean that's simple math isn't it?

Less is more. Now you know. Or is that now you no?

64bit is superior to 32bit... that is why the computer industry has moved in this direction.

I fully understand that 64bit is not what the audio industry uses, and that's fine, but when M-Audio claims that 64bit is a simple translation and they doesn't even have an open beta, that is when I am annoyed. They have it, it is going to be released in a month and a half (so it must be working pretty well by now), but they don't let you get to it. It goes against logic from where I'm standing.

For math intensive...gaming...it shines. What about for working stiffs? Shine still there? The industry, any industry, is a poor barometer for what is or is not superior.

64 bit is TEARS.

You've found out about the terrible driver support for it.
It only brings advantages if the program and OS is clever enough to know how to use it. If they don't, well, it slows you down because it's ineffecient.

Database servers, 64bit? Sure. Consumer machines? My CPU can handle 64bit, but I run a 32 bit OS on it. Because I would rather everything worked than didn't work faster.

Hacks, you know you would be a great Cubase beta tester if only they allowed it and I'm sure some of the forum regs would pick out A LOT of relevant bugs that ends up giving the product a bad name before it hit the market. A bit of a release delay is better than having to be an ALPHA tester when the software is released Wink

I have cubase running on my XP64 bit machine.... To bad its running off of 32bit engine. It is the only link I have that is only 32 bit.. The way I look at it this is the fastest computer Ive built. I have XP32 bit running on another hard drive. If I boot to it, it is not as fast.

XP64 is a dead duck and Vista 64 is still barely used by anyone and therefore not yet a priority, if you went Vista 64 you should have checked that device drivers for audio and MIDI interfaces you have would work before doing it. There probably will be drivers eventually, but for now, either do the beta testing, or dual boot with a 32 bit o/s or find other hardware which does support Vista 64 (not too much I bet)
