Hi. Just want to ask :
What effects do musicians such as Maynard James Keenan (TOOL) and singers like Chino Moreno (Deftones) and other bands with vocalists similar to these mentioned use.
Do these guys use effects like a guitar has pedals and effects applied to it.
What are the effects these guys use. or what are the effects do you use >
Where is a good place to look for hardware than can be laced with your vocals for all kinds of effects from family viewer to the horror enthusiast.
Thanks

I use a cheap mic, plugged into a cheap guitar amp and overdrive the hell out of it until you can't understand what I'm saying due to distortion and limiter going mental. Then I give it to our vocalist and say "solo away".
Trust me it's better this way.
Results vary though. |

Hey, Sylar. This 'board may not be the best source for information about these vocalists, but here's my contribution:
1.) A lot of Maynard's sound has to do with his recorded performances: plugging his nose and using bullhorns are two holistic techniques I've heard about for his "notched" vocal tones. His voice is rarely unaffected/uneffected in Tool's pre-Lateralus days (the only era I'm extensively familiar with), usually involving some form of distortion and/or modulation.
2.) Chino's recordings (pre-self-titled 2003) almost always involve heavy slapback delay. It's what contributes to his voice sounding [pick an adjective: spitty, thick, glottal, clicky...]. Usually distorted. Usually EQ-notched in some way. |
