Bigtree had a good idea elsewhere.
"Is this fake" contest, where you gotta guess how something was recorded.

Also like Erics call on best reply. I'd vote for Cucco's in my Vinyl thread.

As far as who would qualify for prize eligibility... I would think that there might be a way to narrow the prize(es) down to a category or so that most applies or aligns with a topic forum...

e.g. would it really be fair/appropriate to see someone who's just starting out to NOT have a snowball's chance in hell of winning an SM57?

By the same token, wouldn't it be kinda' silly to see a Live Sound member get a bundle of plug-in's when they never touch a DAW?

Of course I'm thinkin' that BigTree will get enough response from manufacturer's to do a give-away of multiple items... which takes me to clarifying the next thought (such as thought processes are, in my feeble "brane bukit"...) of how to award the prizes...

Vetting for qualification wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing... say 25 posts or more before you're eligible.

A different approach here... What about a random drawing of names based upon votes from the mods? Each mod would submit say... 10-20 posters who have either helped or have learned the most from posting in THEIR forum. (Excluding the Mix Critique, Chat and manufacturers' forums... dunno about the feelings regarding the Business forum.)

Then, maybe expand the concept to include submission of names from the general membership in each forum. Where someone has really helped another member, the person helped would be able to "thank" that other member for their assistance... as well as the reverse. Only take the top 10-20 names from these ballots. (same count as submitted by the mods)

Then with 20-40 names per forum, that would make the drawing both fair and equitable... if there's the same name in there twice, then that person's odds are proportional to how much they've been active in that forum.

It not only encourages everyone to help, but it spreads the prize(es) out to a wider group of members.

Again, this is assuming that there are manufacturer's who are willing to donate enough items to cover the 10 or so forums.

If nothing else, 1 drawing/month would cover each forum over the course of a year.

They don't have to be big prizes, either. Heck, I'd love to get a pair of mic cables, a big sweet mic pre, or even a pair of drumsticks. Confused But why should I be eligible for a drawing if I've not contributed to the knowledge base?

Just another hack's humble .02

Okay, thanks for all the suggestions. I've come up with this idea for our first giveaway.

I'm going to give away a Sebatron Proxima for Christmas. Valued at $1000 USD. Who ever wins it, pays for the shipping and any additional insurance or broker fees etc. Its brand new, sitting in our studio rack ready for a new home. Who wants it?
This should be fun.

Okay...

Here is what I have so far. If anyone has suggestions on how to fine tune this, let it be known.

The Goal: To increase our traffic here, plain and simple.. So, I'm thinking, what better way to increase our traffic than to encourage members to post a link of RO, stating that we are giving away a Sebatron mic pre this Christmas.

I'm then thinking:

You must post this phase with a link pointing back to http://recording.org somewhere on the web. It could be on a blog, could be your personal web site.

It should be something like this:

Recording.org is giving away a Sebatron Proxima for Christmas!

I find the winner by searching that phrase on google, bing, yahoo. Its a totally random winner. Not necessarily the first one that comes up on google either. It could be on search page 49.

I have addition ideas to add to this but this is the guts of the first part. Any suggestions on how to make it all round more fun and better.

If this is your phrase:

Recording.org is giving away a Sebatron Proxima for Christmas!

And you want to increase traffic, I suggest you change the link from pointing to Sebatron's website to pointing towards a page about the giveaway on Recording.org. You can talk about Sebatron the company all you want on that page (or any other manufacturer who is donating gear for contests) and the unit itself, but keep the traffic coming to your site instead of someone else's. In fact, make the whole phrase a link to Recording.org.

Ha, I see that just using the word Sebatron in a post here turns it automatically into a link! My mistake.

apstrong,

Yes exactly. Everytime Seb is posted, it automatically becomes a link. Recording.org software does this for a few companies that go beyond, IMHO, call of duty.

Thanks for posting...

Good idea apstrong, makes perfect sense. As an addition, rather then a completly random pick, maybe pick, say, ten links and then have a random selection from those.

Make each potentail winner known as the process evolves so the deal becomes real, maybe inviting more users to get involved.

Then have a random selection from those selected.
