This was a quickie demo for a college jazz group (6 hours to record and mix 4 songs)
This is my first attempt at miking upright bass. I didn't have time to study up on it since the upright was a last minute decision. I decided to throw up a 4033 and a rsm-1 about 6-8 inches from the bridge and mix them. I spent almost all my time trying to get the bass under control, so the drums and vocals got thrown in with very little processing.
I am hoping to get another shot at recording these guys so some helpful hints would be appreciated.
I also seem to have misplaced my Brubeck and Lionel Hampton CD's, so I did not have a reference point when mixing.

Very cool. Sounds like someone is welding in the background.
What is that clipping signal?

Could it be the harsh sounding hi-hat?

I was very conservative with all the recording levels, so I don't think it was clipping on the way in.

The only reverb used on the whole project was on the drum OH's and the vocal. I am wondering if taking some high end out of the OH reverb might help.

Thanks Greener

There is quite a bit of clicking from the upright as well, that might be it.

For the most part I am very pleased, and the customer is happy, but there is something just a little distracting going on.

The bass was my biggest concern, and on my laptop speakers I can hardly hear it at all. You guys must have decent speakers if the low end sounds satisfactory.

well i am a bass player and i was quite pleased with the upright sound...and i like to hear the clicking, i didnt think it detracts personally...i am not a fan of a restricted EQ'd upright sound that only has the meat of the note, likewise im not a fan of acoustic guitar recordings that leave out the fret noise and stuff like that, but thats just me Very Happy

I love this girl's voice. And the recording sounds pretty good too! Nice work. What's the group called?

I found this girls voice to be absolutely amazing. This was one of those deals where the vocal mixed itself. I did very little as far as eq or compression and within seconds it sounded great, so I just left it.

She actually wanted me to use pitch correction, and I very politely said "NOOOO!" and changed the subject quickly. Normally I am very responsive to customers requests, but this time I had to draw the line.

When they came in I asked for the bands name and they just looked around at each other (I guess they haven't thought that far ahead). So in my computer they're folder is labeled...

"Alena andThePeopleWhoPlayJazz"

Which is convenient since I don't have any other jazz clients!

Well, if you would pass on a message that I'd like to buy a copy of that recording when it is available. PM me if you can. I don't find a lot of female vocals that I enjoy that much.

Thanks!!

this was only a demo to get some gigs, but if she doesn't mind maybe I could set up the soundclick account for free downloads.
