Well. those are all interesting topics, Tree. Some observations here:
Because mic placement is a very personal thing, I can't really endorse that. Many engineers take a "I'd tell ya but then I'd have to kill ya" approach to the subject. Note Remy's answer above...
Besides, that wunderkind, Tad Donley has us beat with his own FINE mic videos.
What would you "showcase" about the engineer? "Spotlight on Cucco"?
"Davedogs' Hot Rod Mods"? "Bob Rogers' Band Recording 549 Class"(BR549)? "David French Polishing Techniques to Recording the Piano"? "Link555's Studio666"? "Groff's From Garage to a Studio in 477 Painful Steps"? Hmmm...
We already have gear reviews, don't (maybe, didn't) we? Some kicked ass, others kissed it...
Just what kind of collaborations did you have in mind? How about photos of the ex's who've sold off our gear, trashed our guitars, or otherwise made us regret our involvement in the music biz? On second thought, if she did that to me, why can't she do that to someone else, too?
Didn't you have a "photos" section here last year? I seem to remember a photo of Remy in her truck and a cello-mic'ing shot. THAT was interesting. And you wouldn't even post the photo of me on my boat reeling in a U87 I found floating in the Atlantic!

I think that a lot of new cats just starting out could benefit from the basics when it comes to mic placement. I'd be happy to post pics for new guys and gals to look at. I couldn't care less about the ego trip thing.
A ton of folks come to this site (hourly it seems) to pick our collective brains, and I am more than willing to oblige.

For many years, getting ANY recording or live engineer to disclose his/her mic choices/positioning was taboo, sacred ground.
And, in truth, positioning a mic to get a certain sound is dependent on SO many variables, it's almost pointless. I can see where it might help a novice to get started, and I DO like to see how the "other guy" did something, but it's really hard to relate that to the SOUND you end up with.

moonbaby! I didn't know those floated? I actually threw one back that fell off the back of a truck! But that was 20 years ago when Gotham kept track. A guy whose studio I maintained traded a broken down used Ford van for a hot nonworking U87. He told me that he had given it to the other top maintenance guys in town and none could fix it. He told me if I couldn't fix it I could just keep it. Having a pair myself, it would have been good for parts. But I discovered that Neumann's supplied schematic was quite incorrect! I think they did this on purpose? They also scratched out the original FET transistor part number, in the old days. That way, you'd have to order one from them. It was indicated as a P channel FET in the schematic. When it was in fact a N channel FET. And it had to be installed backwards from the schematic. Then it worked! I utilized a 2N3819 from Radio Shaft only to find out years later THAT WAS THE CORRECT TRANSISTOR NUMBER! I just didn't have the ability to select one with the lowest noise specification. I gave it back to the guy because I didn't want any hot microphones in my collection. He was dumbfounded! I felt dumb also. Dammit! Not many idiots will give away a free working U87. But I did. Of course, I also turned down a maintenance job from Sir George Martin.

Thing is, this past week I've answered more questions on this site like "why flip phase", "what does balanced mean", and "why should I put a mic under the snare?" than I can recall answering in a long time - and I work in a place where engineers and techs come and go on a seemingly weekly basis...

I'm a noob here myself, but I'd love to take part in whatever you guys think will improve on what I feel is an already excellent site.

Yesterday, while enjoying my fair share of Pinot Grigio during the annual
"Burn a Poor Helpless Turkey Day" festivities, I SAW those very same air molecules Remy spoke of!!! The last thing I remember before dozing off was a bunch of those molecules hurdling towards me during Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Texas Flood". Damn, my JerBiLs sounded good!
And, Bent: We needed a fresh face around here. Keep it up!

Exactly. Pro's don't really need to see pics of the other guy's setup, outside of passing curiosity like you said, but the novices do. Those of us that are pro's (If I may be so bold) can do this stuff in our sleep, and sometimes it feels like I am sleeping during those 30 hour-plus gigs...
I was thinking that it would be cool for novices to be able to see certain setups and listen to the actual sound - via link to one of the music posting sites - it would, in my opinion, be an excellent learning tool. I realize that there are a number of people on this site that don't have the time, but I can make the time to do it (I spend most of my time in an office staring at a monitor anyway), and like I said earlier, I have a lot of gear at my disposal...

Good to read your opinion Bent. Very professional and helpful POV.
Its good to read the other less encouraging opinions as well.

I may have more live experience than most members here, however, lack skills in controlled environments and this is why I created RO in the first place. I need to know more. I never feel I know it all and therefore always enjoy reading the forums and would personally appreciate seeing all sorts of images too, even if its, which I totally disagree, useless information like some here are suggesting.
This site is for all levels and why I would gladly add other additions to this site if they are supported.

I have over the years also thought we could incorporate some place for engineers to showcase their work. Maybe I'm wishful thinking here, but I believe everything starts with an idea.

This site has become a bridge to greater things. What may seem useless now could become a part of something amazing later. We learn by asking questions and that is what this site is all about.
