Please Replace My Recessed Ceiling

My home studio is (well, simply put) in a home, obviously; our basement to be exact. When we originally finished off the ceilings years ago, we used the whole recessed ceiling deal with the black metal framing and cheesey 2'x2' panels/tile (whatever their made out of). The room has a room within it, also with a recessed ceiling, which happens to be the sound booth. So here's my problem with the smaller room...my mics pick up every little movement from above. It's pretty harsh. Any walking around upstairs, yada yada yada, ends up distorting the sounds coming through my mics. I imagine I'll pull the ceiling down (approx. 120sq.ft.) and expose the 2nd story floor joists to at least get rid of the horrible crunching sounds of the 2x2 tiles in their frames, but then what would be the best sound proofing method?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
