Hello there,
I've included a brief sketch of the room I'm working with. It's on the second floor in an old paint factory. The walls are 6-8 inch cinder block. Ceilings look like a corrugated steel with girders running across the width distanced 7 feet apart. Ceiling is about 118 inches high.Isolation is not an issue. It is set up currently as a jam space however I've obtained keys to the place and have recently finished a demo in this space. I'm quite pleased with the results so far.
Cut to the chase. Any suggestions on a better setup/utilization of this space. IE. Ideal speaker placement, Broadband treatments. I have champagne taste on a beer budget! Would it make sense to have the speakers against the wall with the drums and ampeg cab shooting towards the door with the players behind?
I've been trying to figure out with the landlord if that sink can go. I'm sure I'll hear about that. This "studio" only has the kitchen sink right now!
Any help would be great. Peace.

I think the blue background makes some things harder to read. However I'm becoming more partial to it as time passes.
Looking at your plans I'm wondering if the south wall is really 25" 11 - 15/16th' long or is that the length of the bent line in the dimensions?
Also, that looks loud as, more amps than I've had hot dinners. Muddy? Got any acoustic treatment?
Can you list all the gear in the room exactly? Like 2 marshal cabs, 2 orange cabs, a fender keyboad amp, an organ and drums... You got a big space which is good.
Thought about some iso cabs?
Back to the new forum layout. Do I have options? |

You should rotate the setup so the speakers are at the wall on the right, facing toward the left. So the right is the front of the room. Then put the drums and other stuff in the rear of the room behind you. More here:
How to set up a room
The treat with bass traps and absorption as usual. All rooms need:
* Broadband (not tuned) bass traps straddling as many corners as you can manage, including the wall-ceiling corners. More bass traps on the rear wall behind helps even further. You simply cannot have too much bass trapping. Real bass trapping, that is - thin foam and thin fiberglass don't work to a low enough frequency.
* Mid/high frequency absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling.
* Some additional amount of mid/high absorption and/or diffusion on any large areas of bare parallel surfaces, such as opposing walls or the ceiling if the floor is reflective. Diffusion on the rear wall behind you is also useful in larger rooms.
For the complete story see my Acoustics FAQ.
There's a lot of additional non-sales technical information on my company's web site - articles, videos, test tones and other downloads, and much more.

Thanks for the quick response.
I'll start from the top. I'm not sure what blue background you are referring to (Greener) as from my end the diagram has no blue. As for these the measurements they are possibly off. I'm not expecting anyone to calculate room modes for me. I understand that I will need to test the room.
I've been laying down bed tracks first and using the closet for an amp isolation area and there is other space available. Here is an overview of the entire space I'm working with. I must state that the scale is off on this one.

The amps and instruments belong to a band. Not sure off hand what their equipment list is exactly but;
2 x 4x12 Orange Cabinet
1 x 8x10 Ampeg w/ SVT Classic
4 or 5 Marshall Heads
2 x 4x12 Marshall Cabinet
Fender 2x12 Combo
(Ethan)
Facing the speakers from right to left on the first drawing was what makes most sense to me. In a sense I didn't want to starting moving all the bands gear around where they have been comfy playing. Now that I have in essence free reign I will move the mix position around. Thank you for confirming this. Great resource on your page as well. I will use it again. |

The drums will probably sound shit sitting in the corner like that. But then again drum positioning these days is over looked far to often.... |
