Global Media Educator Celebrates Ten Years In the U.S.
pwhughes writes: SAE Institute of Technology marks its 10th year in the United States as an industry leader in media education at an event to be held at its newest campus in San Francisco October 22nd, 2009 at 7:00pm
Look at SAE Institute on a world map and you encounter what seems like a sea of dots located in many of the most famous cities around the globe. The first campus opened in Sydney, Australia in 1976, and now with over 50 campuses in 24 countries, SAE’s influence on professional media education truly has a global impact.
SAE opened its first U.S. campus in New York City. This year, it recognizes the 10-year anniversary in the U.S. with an industry event held at its newest campus in San Francisco on October 22nd, 2009. The founder of SAE Institute, Tom Misner along with the Director of North American Operations, Udo Hoppenworth, and Director of the San Francisco campus, Einar Johnson will host the event to a gathering of industry professionals and local artists from the San Francisco Bay area.
The setting for the event, SAE’s San Francisco location, is the sixth campus in the U.S. that was completed earlier this year. Guests will celebrate within the recording studios, production suites and offices in the SOMA district of the city. Faculty and staff from all six U.S. locations: Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, and San Francisco, will be in attendance.
Since its inception over 30 years ago, SAE Institute has grown and progressed in sync with the ever-changing media industry. Originally established as an audio engineering school, SAE has diversified its programs just as aggressively as it has expanded the countries in which SAE educates; including audio, film, game design, and animation.
“It has all gone so quickly for us. It seems amazing that it’s already been 10 years since we first opened the New York campus.” Comments Udo Hoppenworth, “In that time we’ve added five more campuses in the U.S., plus a dozen or so in various countries overseas. It’s been an impressive period of growth for SAE, and as always we’re looking ahead to what we’re going to do next.”
One of the projects Mr. Hoppenworth already has in motion for the North American campuses includes expanding from Diploma-level programs to offering Degree courses. “SAE already offers up to a Master’s degree overseas, so now that we are well-established in the U.S., we are working towards implementing expanded degree-level courses here as well.”
No matter how many campuses SAE builds, one aspect that has always been at its core and never changes is the hands-on, learn by doing approach. By growing through program development and additional campuses, SAE has been able to maintain an environment in which every student has direct access to labs, equipment, studios and faculty. This student-centric approach to education will continue to foster SAE Institute’s growth in size and services to its students and alumni around the world.
Headquartered in Oxford, England, SAE Institute is the world's first and largest network of audio, film and multimedia education and training centers. SAE is affiliated with Middlesex University (England), Southern Cross University (Australia) and Southern Institute of Technology (New Zealand). The Institute operates over 50 campuses in more than 24 countries on four continents; it offers diploma and full degree programs (degree programs offered in EU and AU) in audio, multimedia, digital filmmaking, animation and gaming. SAE is part of the SAE Technology Group, which also owns and operates Studios 301 (with locations in Sydney and Byron Bay, Australia, Cologne, Germany, Studios 301 is a collective group of state-of-the-art recording and mastering facilities), the Computer Graphics College, and QANTM.

Burbank, CA… Royer Labs recently lost a true friend and source of the
company’s inspiration with the passing of Bob Speiden. Bob passed away
peacefully on May 15th after a long illness. He was 87 years old. The
audio community has long recognized Bob as a man passionate about
ribbon microphones. He was David Royer’s main inspiration for taking up
ribbon microphones, leading to Royer Labs’ introduction of modern
ribbon microphone designs to a world that had all but forgotten them.
He will be missed very much.
Bob Speiden was the developer of the original SF-12 stereo ribbon
microphone. He decided to stop making the handcrafted microphone after
his wife became seriously ill and, in 1998, licensed the design to
Royer Labs. Bob had a special relationship with David Royer and
believed that Royer Labs was the only company capable of producing his
unique microphone design properly.
Rick Perrotta, President of Royer Labs, commented on Speiden’s passing.
“All of us at Royer Labs were saddened by the news of Bob’s passing,”
said Perrotta. “Bob was a brilliant audio engineer whose design of the
SF-12 was highly acclaimed throughout the professional audio community.
He had a tremendous influence on all of us here at Royer Labs. Not only
did we consider him a guiding influence, he was also a dear friend.”
David Royer, Chief Engineer at Royer Labs, reflected on Speiden’s
passing. “Bob was very special to me,” said Royer. “His ribbon
microphone designs received critical acclaim by all who encountered
them. He was a real inspiration to me and all who listened to
recordings made with the SF-12 microphone. I learned much from Bob and,
as I worked to improve ribbon microphone technology, I never lost sight
of all that he taught me. He was an absolutely wonderful person.”
Speiden was a very private man. To honor his wishes, his family will
have a private ceremony.
About Royer Labs

No Limit with the Audix M1255B Micro Series Hanging Condenser
lizzie writes: Wilsonville, Ore., (April 2009) — The Audix Micros™ Series, which consist of the world’s smallest condenser microphones with integrated preamp and detachable cable, continue to evolve and break fresh ground with the introduction of the M1255B. This latest development now allows the M1255B to be able to operate, without sacrifice to its performance, on phantom power of 18 – 52 Volts.
Gene Houck, National Sales Manager for Audix, states “We are extremely excited about this development. The previous model, the M1255, really wanted to see 48 Volts of phantom power. As we expanded more and more into commercial integration and ceiling mic applications, we ran into auto mixers such as the popular ClearOne Converge Pro 8i and 840T that only provided 24 volts of phantom power. We knew that in order to be a universal microphone solution for board rooms, video conferencing and training facilities, we needed to be able to operate on whatever phantom power is provided at any given job
site. The M1255B not only does that but does it while maintaining its high output sensitivity (an additional 10 - 12 dB of output over other competitive products) and it’s extremely low noise level of 21 dB (A weighted)”
“Another new design feature of the M1255B,” continues Houck, “is that the interior wall of the body is now gold plated. The gold plating helps in reducing self-noise, enhances the circuit signal path and over time, will keep the circuit more environmentally stable.”
With a stylishly machined brass housing and modular threaded capsule, the M1255B features a smooth frequency response of 50 Hz – 20 kHz, 12 mm gold vapor diaphragm, a selection of 4 capsules, and complete immunity from RF caused by cell phones and GSM devices.
Dick Tollberg, CTS-S Senior Design Engineer with AVI-SPL states, “The Audix Micro series intrigued us with its small size and embedded electronics which allowed us to run plenum rated cable directly to the mic connector via a tiny opening in the ceiling tile. That, plus the extra 12 dB of sensitivity with the M1255 allows us to successfully integrate it in our ceiling conferencing applications.”
Similarly, the M1255B is a problem solver as a table microphone for meetings, conferences or as an overhead microphone for choirs and orchestras. There is an array of clips and accessories available that enable the M1255B to be used on instruments, podiums and mic stands. Also available for overhead and distance miking is the MicroBoom ™ carbon fiber boom arm.
The M1255B is available from authorized Audix dealers in a matte black finish at a suggested retail price of $419, or a white finish at a suggested retail price of $439. Supplied accessories include a 25’ cable, hanging mic clip, mic stand adapter, external windscreen and a pouch.
Audix is a leading U.S. manufacturer of high-quality microphones and monitor speakers for the live sound and recording markets. For more information, contact Audix sales at (800) 966-8261, or visit us on the web at www.audixusa.com.

Cleveland, 3/18/09—When is the last time anyone asked you how you want your sound to look?
Audimute, a Cleveland-based manufacturer of acoustical products, does just that with the introduction of its new line of Football, Baseball, Guitar, Pub and Movie Theater Acoustic Image Panels. Just like Audimute’s standard acoustic panels, these designer panels reveal purer sound by absorbing sound waves that cause echoes and reverberant noise. They also substantially reduce volume levels to create a more pleasing environment.
But Audimute Acoustic Image Panels go beyond that to focus on form as much as function. Beginning with high-quality acoustic materials available in a wide range of shapes and colors, Audimute’s expert designers collaborate with clients to create custom elements that complement any room décor. They can work with a favorite photo, image or logo—or design something completely new, such as the new line of Acoustic Image Panels that feature images of baseball, football, guitars, pubs and movie theaters. As part of this new line of Acoustic Image Panels, clients have the option of customizing both the pub and movie theater images with their own names to create a more personalized effect. Audimute also offers illumination options to further highlight this absorptive artwork.
Audimute Acoustic Image Panels are the perfect choice to add an artistic touch wherever sound needs to be improved or controlled. The applications are unlimited:
Business: Conference rooms, offices, restaurants, retail space, exhibition halls School/houses of worship: Classrooms, music/rehearsal space, libraries, meeting rooms, sanctuaries Home: Home theaters, workshops, band/instrument practice rooms, game rooms
How Are Audimute Panels Different? At Audimute, we take pride in both the performance of our products and what they’re made of. While other companies construct their panels from Fiberglass or foam, we use only 100 percent Earth-friendly natural and recycled cotton to provide superior sound absorption. Hand crafted in the USA, Audimute acoustical panels are effective and affordable.
Why Buy From Audimute? Audimute is a well-respected soundproofing company founded on the principles of cutting-edge technology, environmentally conscious innovation and quality craftsmanship. Over the years we have proudly provided our customers with not only exceptional acoustic solutions at low prices but also the peace of mind afforded by unbeatable service.
